Muslims believe every human being is born in a natural state of fitrah (فطرة), which is an innate disposition to recognize and submit to one God. This pure state includes a natural inclination toward truth, morality, and belief in the Creator.
The term “revert” is used instead of “convert” because, from an Islamic perspective, embracing Islam is not adopting a new faith, but rather returning to one’s original, God-given nature. Life’s influences — family, culture, or environment — may lead someone away from this innate truth, but accepting Islam is viewed as coming back to it.
This idea is supported by a famous hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):
“Every child is born upon the Fitrah (natural disposition), but it is his parents who make him a Jew, Christian, or Magian…”
So, to “revert” is to realign oneself with the original state of submission to God, which Islam defines as the true and natural path.
